Marco (lat. Ambrosia peruviana), also known as "Altamisa", is an aromatic herb native to South America, especially Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. It is used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiseptic properties. This herb is also known as 'wild Ambrosia' and its use dates back to the indigenous Andean cultures.

It is an herb or low shrub, growing to a height of 1-1,5 metres. It has small, silvery leaves and inconspicuous yellowish flowers. It grows in tropical and subtropical areas of South America, on rocky and dry slopes at higher altitudes.

It is used in traditional medicine for the following health problems:

  • rheumatism (baths, poultices)
  • neurotic, nervous disorders and hysteria
  • reduced and irregular menstruation
  • stomach pains
  • inflammations and mycotic infections of the feet (baths)
  • bronchitis, cough
  • asthma (regular drinking)

Dosage and method of use:

For anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory effect: 10 g pour a liter of boiling water, infuse for 15 minutes. Drink one cup (250 ml) 3-4 times a day and wash the affected areas.
For nervous problems (neuralgia, hysteria) and others: 10 g pour a liter of hot water, infuse for 15 minutes. Drink 3-4 times a day.
A decoction of the plant can be used for external applications for rheumatic pains, swelling or skin problems. Inhalation, in turn, is a traditional way to clear the respiratory tract.
Warning: it is not recommended to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding as it may have potentially stimulating effects on the uterus.
Allergies: people sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family (such as dandelion, chamomile or ragweed) should be careful as it can cause allergic reactions.
Long-term use: side effects such as stomach irritation or allergic reactions may occur with long-term or high dosage.
